Roulette takes it name from the French language word for 'little wheel'. This highly popular casino game is played everywhere from Atlantic City to Vegas and beyond. There are many variations, but, essentially, a croupier spins a ball around the wheel, and players can bet in advance on numbers either high or low, red or black, odd or even. The ball eventually stops and lands on a number as the wheel spins, and this determines the winner.

European vs American Roulette

One of the major differences in roulette variants is between European and American Roulette, as the rules are slightly different. In the European version, there are 37 slots on the roulette wheel, whereas in American roulette, there are 38.

The History of Roulette

The earliest origins of the game we now know as roulette began in France, during the 1700s. The design was based on a combination of a type of gaming wheel, with a lotto-style game from Italy called Biribi.

The game consolidated into the one that we recognise today by the end of the 18th century, as historians noted, being mentioned in literature at the time. By the nineteenth century, this new game spread across Europe and the United States, consolidating its grip on gambling houses and casinos, most notably in places like Monte Carlo, and New Orleans.

Roulette Betting Types

In Roulette, the objective is to predict where the ball will land on the roulette whee. In doing this, you place "inside" bets or "outside" bets.  This is a reference to the inside and outside of the roulette wheel, which contain different markings.

Outside Betting

Outside bets have smaller payouts, but bigger odds. However, if a zero is the winning ball, then these payouts are voided.

  • 1 to 18: Low. 19 to 36: High
  • Red or Black: A bet on the two colours that make up alternate indentations on the roulette wheel.
  • Odds or Evens: In this type of bet, the bettor bets that the winning number will be either odd or even.
  • Snake Bet: This is a bet on a sequence of specific numbers that run in a zig zag line down the length of the roulette table, in the shape a snake. The sequence goes 1, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16, 19, 23, 27, 30, 32, and 34.
  • Dozen Bet: A bet that the winning number will be in the first, second or final third of the roulette wheel, each made of a dozen numbers.
  • Column Bet: In this type of bet, you can bet on one of the three vertical column 12 of numbers on the roulette table.

Inside Betting

  • Single or Straight: This is a bet on a single number. Very high risk.
  • Corner / Square: This bet is on 4 numbers that meet in a single corner.
  • Street: This type of bet involves three numbers in a row. For example, 1, 2, and 3.
